Even if you are not an IT geek or server administrator guru, you are likely to have at least a general idea of what these confusing high tech buzzwords mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Especially now, when Google uses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/webmasters.googleblog.com\/2014\/08\/https-as-ranking-signal.html\" target=\"_blank\">HTTPS as a ranking signal<\/a>&nbsp;and gives HTTPS pages a huge bump in rankings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And taking into account that this behemoth search engine is responsible for a whopping 77,82% of organic search traffic, you\u2019d better take it seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>\n            What is HTTPS?    <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">If you\u2019re an SEO and you\u2019re recommending against going HTTPS, you\u2019re wrong and you should feel bad.<\/p> \u2014 Gary Illyes \u1555( \u141b )\u1557 (@methode) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/methode\/status\/633541668403310593\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">August 18, 2015<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) is a network protocol designed to protect your store from possible cyber attacks and secure all sensitive data transfers, such as credit card transactions, logins and other personal information passed from a visitor\u2019s browser to your website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no need to go into the mind-bending process of HTTPS configuration to understand the basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are merely three simple things you should know about using HTTPS protocol for your eCommerce website:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"checklist darkblue gb-list__check gb-list__check--blue wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>All transferred data is safely encrypted<\/strong>&nbsp;and therefore makes no real sense for web hacker as they do not have the key to decipher it. So, no one can copy your customers\u2019 credit cards data or read your Facebook messages, phew!<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Data integrity is additionally controlled<\/strong>, which means that sensitive data cannot be modified in any way during the transfer. At least without being noticed.<br>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Authentication<\/strong>&nbsp;prevents your online store from the so-called&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Man-in-the-middle_attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">man in the middle<\/a>&nbsp;attacks, when a hacker gets full access to the data transmitted between your eCommerce store and customers, browsing it.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>With HTTPS on board,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.x-cart.com\/blog\/ecommerce-fraud.html\">all these crafty scams<\/a>&nbsp;are in no way possible.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>\n            Does Your Business Need HTTPS?    <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google\u2019s HTTPS algorithm was first announced on August 6, 2014 (it\u2019s been almost 2,5 years already!), held the same sway over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.x-cart.com\/blog\/ecommerce-seo.html\">SEO<\/a> in 2016 and is still prioritized now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On January 27, 2016, Parisa Tabriz, Google\u2019s self-appointed \u201cSecurity Princess\u201d, tweeted about the company\u2019s plans towards the future of unsafe HTTP-sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They are going to shame them with a big fat red \u201cX\u201d mark placed over the padlock icon in the URL bar for Chrome users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">HTTP, we&#8217;re readying to call you out for what you are: UNSAFE! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KuA6ARoH6n\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/KuA6ARoH6n<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/enigma2016?src=hash\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#enigma2016<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Vs69HDZc2J\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/t.co\/Vs69HDZc2J<\/a><\/p>\n\n\u2014 Security Princess (@laparisa) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/laparisa\/status\/692112921866964993\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 26, 2016<\/a><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Is this what your plans were about? Hope, not. So don\u2019t hesitate to start planning your HTTPS migration today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, you can make your online store HTTPS-compliant with absolutely no hassle at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First of all, you\u2019ll have to install SSL certificate. There is a wide range of SSL certificate providers in the World Web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just Google it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, you don\u2019t have to travel far afield as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.x-cart.com\/hosting\" target=\"_blank\">SSL Certificates<\/a>\u00a0are also offered by X-Cart. Run a free&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssllabs.com\/ssltest\/analyze.html\" target=\"_blank\">SSL Server Test<\/a>&nbsp;\u2014 if the results are other than A, you\u2019ve got some security issues.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2>\n            HTTPS Is Not Only About Security\u2026    <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s quite clear that HTTPS has something to do with&nbsp;<a>security of your customers\u2019 data<\/a>, stored and transferred via non-secure-by-default public networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How else can migrating to HTTPS be important for your eCommerce business?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"checklist darkblue gb-list__check gb-list__check--blue wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>You get an additional boost in search engine rankings<\/strong>. Though migrating to HTTPS can not instantly make your website rank #1 for every single keyword, it will definitely impact your rankings on Google\u2019s first page in the nearest future. HTTP-websites, marked with red crossed out icon, will be considered as insecure and, I believe, soon be totally ignored by search engines.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u0413\u0435 will boost your trust and credibility<\/strong>. The first thing your visitors see entering your online store is the green address bar, which instantly adds trustworthy to the products you offer. And it works! According to a&nbsp;<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/downloads.globalsign.com\/acton\/attachment\/2674\/f-0360\/1\/-\/-\/-\/-\/increase-conversions-with-SSL.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">servey from GlobalSign<\/a>, 28.9% of visitors won\u2019t take a chance to buy anything, if they don\u2019t see a green padlock. Moreover, 35% of your potential customers want to see the name of the company in the address bar to consider your eCommerce store secure enough to make a purchase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>You\u2019ll get a better referral data<\/strong>. Did you know that HTTP to HTTPS referral data is completely lost in your Google Analytics report, as it looks like \u201cdirect\u201d traffic? Let\u2019s say, your website is still on HTTP and you went viral on Facebook or YouTube. As both sites are running over HTTPS, all your referral data will be labeled as \u201cdirect\u201d in Google Analytics, which really means \u201cwe have no clue where it came from, maybe they typed the URL in or hit a bookmark\u201d and is not quite helpful. Only enterprise eCommerce businesses can afford the move to HTTPS    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Nowadays big companies, like Moz or Buffer, love to boast about switching to HTTPS: \u201cour SEO-specialists made a thorough link analysis\u201d, \u201cdevs prepared the environment\u201d, \u201cdata scientists made a bottom-line report\u201d, and other blah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reading these reviews here and there you might think that only million-dollar businesses (with thousands of visitors crawling their pages daily) have enough power to move to a new protocol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hopefully, there\u2019s nothing to be afraid of and even if you are the only employee, you can change HTTP to HTTPS quite easily.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>\n            Myth #2. OMG, migration to HTTPS will crash my store!    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Major sites like Wikimedia or Reddit were quite quick to migrate to a safer world. Everything went smooth and none of the passengers was hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, not everyone was that lucky. Buffer, for instance, faced a steep drop in organic traffic accurately after they switched from HTTP to HTTPS. Later on, Google admitted that it was their fault and traffic was restored soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, there may be some obstacles, but they are hardly possible to bear upon small and medium businesses, we\u2019ve tested it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, needless to say, your eCommerce site won\u2019t be cracked into pieces, be sure!<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>\n            Myth #3. There would be a number of errors &amp; Google will ban me forever (I\u2019m feeling lucky)    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No, it\u2019s not true. Of course, mistakes can happen, but one can easily eliminate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a look at your URLs \u2014 some of them may be blocked by robot.txt, or canonical tags can point at the wrong HTTP URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember to carefully check it all before making any move from HTTP to HTTPS. Or ask your sysadmin to fix it for you, he knows it for sure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When done right, you won\u2019t find a single error, don\u2019t fret ahead of time.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>\n            Myth #4. My store will be slower than a herd of snails traveling through peanut butter, boo-hoo\u2026    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As HTTPS requires extra client-server communication \u201chandshakes\u201d, speed issues can occur. In extreme cases, SSL negotiation may add an additional half a second to your page loading time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It can be caused by various reasons: data center location, where you host your DNS records, ping issues, and so on. Good news is that all these things can be easily fixed. Moreover, you have a team of professionals and a good portion of theory on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.x-cart.com\/blog\/speed-up-website.html\">speeding up your store<\/a>. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, one of our customers, Hwai Shieh at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bobateadirect.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Boba Tea Direct<\/a>, did experience some speed issues after migrating to HTTPS. SSL negotiation took the whole 400 ms which was way too much. With a bit of magic applied, our hosting pros managed to boost speed by as much as 4 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speed problems are totally unlikely for those who host their stores on X-Cart fully-managed VPS servers.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3>\n            Myth #5. I\u2019ll have to pay a whole lot of money for keeping my store HTTPS-ready    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many webmasters pay up to $800 per year for SSL certificates. That\u2019s a significant amount for those who has just started selling online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, of course, there exist cost-efficient options. My store is not yet ready for migration. Maybe tomorrow?    <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No doubt, migration to HTTPS takes a certain time and a bit of preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, as we all know, forewarned is forearmed. So, if you heed our advice, you won\u2019t make any mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to do the following:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"checklist darkblue gb-list__check gb-list__check--blue wp-block-list\">\n<li>If possible, make as few redirect jumps as possible. Some browsers find it difficult to follow too many redirects and sometimes even refuse to load a page. Multiple 301 redirects are often used by spammers, so in the nearest future such links may be penalized by Google and you may lose some link value.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Turn on HSTS, which tells browsers to use HTTPS instead of HTTP to access your web server. If you\u2019re not using HTTPS only, as Gary Illyes says, \u201cweird stuff happen in indexing\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<h2>\n            Some of the X-Carters have already migrated to HTTPS.
